Postpartum hair loss is very common, but also extremely frustrating all at once. Although normal, it is actually not considered hair loss by specialists. Dermatologists actually refer to postpartum hair loss as excessive hair shedding. People typically shed up to 100 hairs per day, while postpartum you can lose more than 100 per day.
During the third trimester your estrogen levels increase, causing hairs to enter the resting phase of growth. Following birth your estrogen levels will drop and after a few months shedding will begin. Shedding usually peaks around 4 months postpartum. This excessive amount of hair loss is only temporary and most women see their hair thickness returning by their child’s first birthday and even sooner sometimes.
Below are some tips to help with postpartum hair loss or excessive shedding:
- Fuel your body. Make sure that you continue to take your prenatal vitamin postpartum or a postpartum supplement alternative, in addition to eating a well balanced diet. A biotin supplement can also be beneficial for hair health!
- Take it easy. Being nice to your hair will be important as you begin to shed excessively during your postpartum period. Shampoo infrequently, use a high quality conditioner, consider periodically using a hair mask and brush your hair gently while still in the shower.
- Leave the elastics at home. Using a scrunchie or a large claw clip will help protect your hair during your postpartum period. If you are to use a hair elastic, be sure to not pull your hair into a tight ponytail.
- Cool it down. Consider avoiding heated hair tools when possible, including blow dryers, curling irons and straighteners.
Always remember, there is no need to panic when you begin to shed postpartum. Follow these tips and be nice to your hair to limit unnecessary damage!
